24 June 2008: Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, hosts summit to honour 60 years of health research in the NHS Gordon Brown confirms that health research is a core function of the NHS at a specially convened health research summit to commemorate 60 years of NHS research at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust.
Speaking at the summit, Alan Johnson, Secretary of State for Health, stated that every patient in the NHS should have the right to take part in approved medical research that is appropriate for them, and set out the measures that will be introduced to deliver this commitment. Alan Johnson.

04 June 2008: Multi-million pound funding announced for the Patient Research Cohorts Initiative More than seven million pounds in funding from the NIHR, the MRC and the health research departments in Scotland and Wales, has been awarded to researchers to create small, extensively defined groups of patients to advance the understanding of different diseases and patient responses, which in turn will lead to the development of innovative new medicines and improved treatments.

30 May 2008: New NIHR School for Social Care Research announced Care Services Minister Ivan Lewis today announced plans to establish a new NIHR School for Social Care Research. A call for statements demonstrating eligibility for membership was also launched today.
